Man oh man, this couple’s Leo Carrillo Ranch wedding was gorgeous, and I am still obsessing over every single detail! This was my first time photographing a wedding at Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, and it has honestly become one of my favorite wedding venues in both Carlsbad and the greater San Diego area. Beautiful historic architecture? Giant cacti? Peacocks wandering around the property? Yes, yes, and yes. I absolutely love the beautiful background that this venue provides for a couple’s wedding day.
First, Some Background Information About Leo Carrillo Ranch
Located in the beautiful eastern side of Carlsbad, California, Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is a 27 acre park that offers a rustic, romantic backdrop that is so unlike any other venue in North County San Diego. Originally built in the late 1930s by actor Leo Carrillo, this former retreat is famous for its preserved Spanish style adobe buildings, sprawling bougainvillea, towering agave, historic pepper trees, and resident peacocks that roam freely across the property.
For couples planning a Leo Carrillo Ranch wedding, the venue offers a seamless blend of natural Southern California beauty with some unique charm. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a much larger celebration, the open air layout and tranquil surroundings create a more cozy intimate experience without feeling overly crowded. I would best describe it as “backyard style wedding at an elegant estate” kind of vibes.
A Little Bit About This Wedding Day
This day so beautifully reflected the tender, sweet relationship between the bride and groom. You could instantly tell how eager they were to start their lives together, and the outpouring of love from their family and friends was heartwarming to watch. A close friend officiated the ceremony, and I guarantee there wasn’t a dry eye in sight…mine included! The toasts were equally touching, with every bridesmaid sharing just how deeply the bride had impacted their lives.
My favorite detail, though? The fun Avengers nods throughout the night! The couple made their grand entrance to the epic Avengers theme song, and the best man wrapped up his speech by telling them he loved them 6,000. That is, 3,000 for each of them. (If you’ve seen Endgame, you know how sweet that was!) It was a day full of pure joy, personal touches, and emotional moments that made this celebration so uniquely them.
What To Know About Planning a Leo Carrillo Ranch Wedding
As a wedding photographer, I do have to point out that shooting at Leo Carrillo Ranch is an absolute dream. The venue provides endless diverse backdrops all within short walking distance of one another. Meaning your overall wedding gallery is likely going to have way more variety to the photos. Here are just a few of the things you can expect to show up in your photos:
- Historic Adobe Architecture & White Walls: The auburn brickwork, rustic wood doors, and white adobe structures provide a timeless, warm texture for portraits, couples photos, and family photos.
- Giant Succulents & Desert Flora: Massive agave plants and towering cacti give a sort of desert oasis feel right smack dab in the middle of Carlsbad.
- The Historic Pepper Trees: Give natural shade (very needed for both photos and staying cool!) and can sometimes give a soft, dappled light for more artsy or romantic photos.
- The Roaming Peacocks: Honestly these guys are just fun. You can pretty much guarantee a few mischievous peacocks will photobomb you during sunset photos or at minimum will be very entertaining to your guests during cocktail hour.
One of my favorite things about getting married in Carlsbad is the incredible year round weather. Fall is an especially dreamy season for a Leo Carrillo Ranch wedding because you get those warm, sunny days without the intense summer heat (or at least, less summer heat) paired with clear evening skies and beautiful orangey red sunset with cotton candy clouds.
I also want to share with you a few general tips for planning your wedding at Leo Carrillo Ranch, so you can make the most of your time at this gorgeous venue!
- Plan Around Golden Hour: Because Leo Carrillo Ranch is heavily shaded in some areas and open in others, timing your couples photos around golden hour is key (and usually this is a good tip to keep in mind no matter where you’re planning your wedding!) The golden sunlight hitting the white adobe walls and agave plants creates a truly stunning glow, and one that you don’t want to miss before the shade rolls in!
- Pick the Right Shoes: The grounds feature historic stone pathways, dirt trails, and lawn spaces. If you plan on wearing high heels, it could be a good idea to add some anti-slip grass protectors or to wear block heels or wedges to give you a little more stability. And of course, you can always do something extra fun like wear boots or some custom converse!
- Give the Wildlife Space: While the resident peacocks are friendly and comfortable around humans, remember they are wild birds and we’re guests in their home! Like with all wildlife, it’s best to let them wander where they please and keep a respectful distance.
